The sixties were a vibrant time for folk music. At perhaps no other time did it reach so wide and varied an audience. In the midst of such an explosion and proliferation of talent it is regrettable but perhaps inevitable that some greats can slip through the fingers of history.
One such great was Tom Cantine. Born in 1947, in Trenton, New Jersey, the only child of a coal miner and a truck stop waitress, by the age of 20, he had risen to the top of the local Trenton Folk scene.
During that most famous "Summer of Love" Tom played folk music festivals all over the world, entertaining the crowds with his particular brand of musical education Unfortunately a recording contract never managed to come his way, and he soon retired from the scene to a career in electronics.
For years, bootleg recordings of Tom Cantine circulated in the folk collectors scene, but very few, if any., of these recordings survuved to the present day. It has been generally acknowledged that his music had been lost forever.
However, following his death last year by lead posioning, several of his personal tapes went for auction to help pay his outstanding medical bills. And How! magaizne is proud to have won the lot.
It is our great pleasure to present the songs of Tom Cantine here for the first time in several years.
We will continue to post new songs as they are remastered and cleaned up.
Enjoy.
